About Red Adler:
Red Alder is the largest species of alder in North America and one of the largest in the world. It grows from southeast Alaska south to central coastal California, nearly always within about 200 km of the Pacific coast, except for an extension 600 km inland across northern Washington into northernmost Idaho.

Red alder, a relative of birch, is almost white when freshly cut but quickly changes on exposure to air, becoming light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge. Heartwood is formed only in trees of advanced age and there is no visible boundary between sap and heartwood. The wood is fairly straight-grained with a uniform texture.

Alder can have two natural colors, depending on what finish is used. Water white lacquer and blonde shellac will make it a light gold, while any amber-toned finish will make it red in tone, almost like early cherry. It is called “poor man’s cherry” because of this coloring. However, it does not darken over time like cherry.

Due to increasing demand for commercial use, red alder prices on the West Coast actually are competitive with the cost of many Eastern hardwoods of its caliber.
